The NFL’s Super Bowl is the most viewed television event annually in the United States, making the iconic American Football game a staple of the culture. The Super Bowl was first played in 1967, and in the 2023-24 season, the Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers contest set a new record for viewership in the big game.
With the Chiefs winning their fourth Super Bowl, you may wonder which teams have won the most Super Bowls ever. Continue reading, as we break down some of the NFL teams with the most Super Bowls.
Although the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t stand alone at the top of this list, they do come first historically for the most Super Bowls won. In 1975, the Steelers would begin the “Steel Curtain” dynasty in a time where their defense led the way into a highly physical form of championship-winning football.
The Steelers would go on to win it again in 1976, marking the first second-half comeback in the history of the big game. Pittsburgh then won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1979 and 1980, cementing them as a dynasty. However, the city of bridges went quiet until 1996, when the Steelers would make it back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 16 years. They lost this game to a heavily favored Cowboys team, but this wasn’t the end for the Steelers.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would revive the franchise in 2006 when he led the Steelers to their first Super Bowl victory in 26 years against the Seattle Seahawks. Hines Ward scored two touchdowns in an epic performance, including the first touchdown thrown by a receiver in Super Bowl history. This was followed up by a 2009 Super Bowl win in which James Harrison recorded a 100-yard interception for a touchdown, and Santonio Holmes made an iconic grab on a game-winning drive to seal the deal.
Pittsburgh lost the Super Bowl in 2011 to the Green Bay Packers and has not returned since. The Steelers’ six Super Bowl victories are tied with the New England Patriots as the top two NFL teams with the most Super Bowls.
The New England Patriots dynasty will always be known as the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era. When the Patriots drafted Tom Brady in the sixth round of the NFL draft, he told owner Robert Kraft that he was the “best decision this franchise has ever made”. When starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe got injured during the 2001 season, Tom Brady would begin backing up his statement immediately.
After Super Bowl losses in 1985 and 1998, Tom Brady would lead the Patriots on a 2001 postseason run that will be remembered forever. Bill Belichick trusted his young quarterback, and Brady would put on an epic performance against the Oakland Raiders in a treacherous snowstorm. Kicker Adam Vinatieri hit a 45-yard field goal through the snow to force overtime, where he would then kick the game-winner in OT. This led to an AFC Championship win over Pittsburgh, and a thrilling first Super Bowl victory against the St. Louis Rams, who was known as “the greatest show on turf”. This electric win would jump-start one of the most dominant dynasties in American sports history.
The Patriots went on to win two electric Super Bowls in 2003 and 2004 with incredible teams, while making Tom Brady a superstar quarterback in the league. This was an incredible run for New England, but they would go on a tough Super Bowl drought until 2014 when the Pats would take down Russel Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.
Then, in 2017, Tom Brady did the unthinkable. After a drawn-out deflategate controversy resulting in early-season suspension, Brady would take the Patriots to the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons. New England faced a deficit of 28-3 late in the third quarter when Brady would lead the most unlikely comeback in Super Bowl history. James White scored an overtime touchdown to win the Patriots their fifth Super Bowl.
After this, New England would reach the big game one last time against the LA Rams in 2019, in a low-scoring gutsy victory, marking their sixth and final Super Bowl win.
With the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots leading the pack for Super Bowls, there is a tight race going on behind them. Here are the next teams on the list of NFL teams with the most Super Bowls:
Three of the Chiefs Super Bowl wins have come since 2019, with Patrick Mahomes leading the charge in all of these wins. The Chiefs are the current defending champions, and they will look to make history this coming season as the first NFL team to win three straight Super Bowls.
