Tennis is an extremely popular sport globally, with some of the most competitive ATP tours underway annually in nations everywhere. Of course, players will be dealing with large potential prize pools, some of which offer an unprecedented amount to the top performers in the top tournaments.
In this article, we’ll outline the top five highest-paying tennis tournaments by their prize pools, including where they occur, how much money is in the pool, and how they devise the final payouts.
First up on the list of generous tennis prize pools is the ATP Finals, the only non-Grand Slam tourney to make the list. Sitting at nearly three times less than the prize pool of the more popular tournaments, the ATP Finals awards a combined winning total of $15.25 million.
While it’s not as prestigious as the other, only eight singles players participate in the tourney (with the potential for a further eight doubles pairings). For singles prize money from 2024, a player who goes undefeated to win the championship wins nearly $4.9 million of the main prize pool, which while only a third of the pot, is a generous amount of money.
Following up the ATP Finals and its $15.24 million prize pool, the Australian Open sits at a whopping $55.75 million in payouts to winning tennis players. Out of the four majors on this list, the Australian Open generally has the lowest total payout, although it only sat below the French Open by around $800,000 in 2024.
A declared champion of the Australian Open makes $3.5 million, while semi-finalists and finalists earn $1,100,000 and $1,900,000, making good money (over $1 million) for players that didn’t even win the whole thing.
The French Open takes over the Australian Open prize pool by approximately $800,000 for a total of $56.58 million for its participants. While champions in the singles tournament earn $2.5 million ($1 million less than Australian Open Singles), with runner-ups earning $1.2 million, the tournament offers a large chunk of the prize money to its doubles tournament.
Winning either the Men’s or Women’s Doubles at the French Open nets $631,000 for each player on the winning team, with nearly another $300,000 paid to finalists.
Edging out the French Open prize money total by nearly $7.25 million is the famous Wimbledon tournament, with a $63.78 million prize pool offered to the competitors. For the 2024 tournament, Ladies and Gentlemen’s singles tournament champions earn $2,700,000 for taking home the trophy.
Winning the doubles championship nets both players $650,000 in total. Overall, Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments and only falls behind one other major tournament in available prize money.
Sitting at the top with the most money paid to tennis players in any professional tournament is the US Open, with a $75 million prize pool. While a singles winner may not earn as much for themselves as they would from the ATP Finals (which sees fewer players involved), they still take home a whopping $3.6 million in winnings. Runner-ups earn $1.8 million, and semi-finalists earn $1 million flat.
The doubles pay is also higher, with champions for either men’s or women’s doubles taking home $750,000 apiece. Overall, the US Open may not have the highest pay to its championship winners compared to the ATP Finals, but it has the highest payout in any of the four major tournaments for all the tennis players involved in singles and doubles.
