  • Top 5 English Clubs With the Most FA Cup Trophies

Arsene Wenger celebrates after winning a game with Arsenal.

While top-flight English clubs usually dominate, all the English level club teams participate in the FA Cup annually to prove which team takes home the title of Best Team in England. It’s a historical tournament dating as far back as November 1871, and since then, the FA Cup has become one of the most popular soccer tournaments to witness with extremely high stakes.

In this article, we’ll outline the top teams with the most FA Cup titles, including what teams won, what years they won and any notable key facts leading to their success.

    5. Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers – 6 FA Cups

Coming in at the start of the list tied for six overall FA Cup titles are Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers. Newcastle managed to win their first trophy in 1910 before adding two more titles to the mix in 1924 and 1932. They went on a hot streak in the early 1950s, winning in 1951, 1952 and finally in 1955.

Blackburn Rovers, on the other hand, would be one of the earliest successful English Clubs, winning three straight FA Cups in 1884, 1885 and 1886. They’d win it again in 1890 and 1891 before winning one final time in 1928, putting them ahead of Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Wanderers by just one overall FA Cup victory.

    4. Manchester City, Aston Villa – 7 FA Cups

As overall cup titles for each team thin out as we approach a higher number of total FA Cup trophies, Manchester City, along with Aston Villa, would showcase seven separate times where they’d take home an FA Cup trophy.

Aston Villa would start a legacy of hefty FA Cup victories in 1887, 1895 and 1897 before starting off the 20th century with victories in 1905, 1923, 1920 and most recently in 1957. Manchester City, however, has had more recent success with wins in 1904, 1934, 1956, 1969, 2011, 2019 and most recently in 2023 under club manager Pep Guardiola.

    3. Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool – 8 FA Cups

Sitting at eight FA Cup trophies are three different clubs: Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool, all tied for third in total FA Cup wins. Tottenham would find the start of their success in 1901 with their first FA Cup victory, only to wait 20 years before another in 1921. 1961 and 1962 would prove back-to-back victories for the Spurs before winning it again in 1967, 1981, 1982, and 1991 with no victories in the 21st century.

Chelsea has shown much better success than most teams in the FA Cup in recent decades, winning eight total in 1970, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2018, proving to be a very efficient FA Cup franchise. Liverpool would showcase a similar strut to Chelsea, although slightly earlier, starting in 1974 with their first victory, before taking it home seven more times in 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2006 and most recently in 2021 under Jurgen Klopp.

    2. Manchester United – 13 FA Cups

As we hit second place, Manchester United is a clear standalone team with 13 FA Cup trophies. United has a history of greatness in English football, especially under the guidance of Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson from 1986 to 2013. Proving their dominance in English football, Manchester United would take home the FA Cup for the first time in 1909 before waiting another 39 years to win their second.

1963 and 1977 would be the next two years of greatness for the club, followed by a successful decade in the 80s with victories in 1983 and 1985, before ultimately taking off in the 90s for four separate FA Cups in 1990, 1994, 1996 and 1999. In hitting the 21st century, Manchester United would continue to put the pedal down, winning it again in 2004, before most recently in 2016 and 2024 for 13 FA Cups, a record only broken by one other English football club.

    1. Arsenal – 14 FA Cups

Ahead by just one trophy compared to Manchester United is Arsenal FC, with 14 total FA Cup wins, the most out of any English club in the sport. When it comes down to it, Arsenal were the ‘invincible’ in this tournament, and for a long time running, they were completely unbeatable, especially during the ‘Invincible era’ in 2003-2004 under head coach Arsene Wenger.

Starting in 1930, they’d take home their first English FA Cup trophy before repeating it in 1936 and 1950. Twenty years would pass before Arsenal would see their next title in 1971, only to take home another win in 1979. It’d take a while to hit their stride, but they’d once again come out victorious in the finals in 1993, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2005, solidifying their dominant era in English football. But that wasn’t all for the club, which would win four more times in 2014, 2015, 2015 and 2020, taking the record for most FA Cup wins out of any club team in English football.
