Soccer is one of the many sports with an extremely large following, although it’s one of the few games where few points get scored. If you’re a soccer fan, you’re most likely used to waiting for those one or two moments in games where a tide-shifting goal gets scored.
Throughout many seasons of the English Premier League, fans have witnessed all types of games, from low to high scoring. In soccer, high-scoring games are genuinely infrequent, but we have picked out the six highest-scoring Premier League games of all time, of which five are tied on 10 goals per game.
Starting with one of the two high-scoring Tottenham Hotspur games on this list, one of the highest-scoring EPL games ever in the Premier League (tied with four others), is the end-of-season match against Reading.
In this one, Tottenham’s legendary midfielder Dimitar Berbatov would score in the 7’, 63’, 73’ and 83’ minutes, along with teammates Steed Malbranque and Jermain Defoe each netting just 1. With 6 goals against Reading’s 4, Tottenham would come out of this bloodbath victorious.
Another legendary Tottenham game pops up on the list of highest-scoring EPL games ever, with a match to remember against Wigan Athletic on November 22, 2009. In this one, Defoe would score a whopping 5 goals from the 51’ to the 87’.
Teammates Aaron Lennon, David Bentley, Niko Kranhcar and Wigan Athletic’s Paul Scharner would all add to the tally, but with Defoe’s 5 goals in the bag and 9 for the team, it’d be impossible for the Hotspurs to lose this high-scoring match.
Manchester United made the list in a dominant showdown against Arsenal on August 28, 2011. United legend Wayne Rooney would score 3 goals, 1 of them a penalty, with teammate Ashley Young scoring a brace in the 91’ minute.
Nani and Ji-sung Park would add to United’s tally later in the game, while Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie would only add 2 to the match.
Over a year later, Arsenal would go full throttle against a solid Newcastle United team, winning the game 7-3 in late December of 2012. Walcott would earn his hat-trick in the 92’ minute of the game, while teammates Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski would add to the tally, while Olivier Giroud added 2.
Only Newcastle’s Demba Ba would put on a notable performance for the Magpies, scoring 2 for his team, along with Sylvain Marveaux’s 59’ minute goal, finishing the game 7-3.
The first game on the list that ended as a tie, Manchester United vs West Brom on May 19, 2013, is the highest-scoring EPL tied match in history. If you watched this one live, it was a spectacle. The lead would pass back and forth, starting with United scoring 3, before Bromwich’s James Morrison and Romelu Lukaku would each net 1.
United would pull away 5-2 in the 53’ minute with a goal from Van Persie and a goal in the 63’ from Theo Hernandez. West Brom’s Lukaku would finish the game with a hat trick and an 86-minute goal, tying the game 5-5.
Finally, the highest-scoring EPL game of all time, the only game with 11 total goals, is the September 29, 2007 matchup between Portsmouth and Reading. Neither of these teams are in the Premier League any more, but they certainly left their mark! Portsmouth’s Benjani Mwaruwari would score a hat trick by the 70’ minute, with teammates Hermann Hreioarsson, Niko Kranjcar and Sulley Muntari also scoring, along with an 81-minute own goal.
However, Reading would put up a decent fight, taking it to Portsmouth in the second half, scoring in the 45’, 48’ and 79’ before adding a 94’ minute own goal to end the game 7-4 as the highest-scoring EPL game ever.
