We have ranked every single NFL team according to how many X (formerly Twitter) followers they have, as at November 14, 2024. Many people might expect ‘America’s Team’ to rank number one, but in fact there’s a different team on top of the Twitter rankings list. Last place may be a little easier to guess, but we will get to that later!
For now, let’s look at the top five NFL teams in terms of follower number on X, based on their official accounts:
This is the surprise entry on our top five list – at least to those resident outside of Carolina. The 4 other teams in the top 5 have a combined total of 18 Super Bowl titles, and the latest entrant to the league was in 1960. The Panthers have yet to win a Championship and joined the NFL as recently as 1995, making them outliers on this list. However, it seems that their social media team is currently outperforming the team on the field. Keep Pounding Carolina!
The Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl X, but only manage fourth place on our X poll. The Steelers have been around since 1933 and are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. 3.7 million X users follow their official account, unsurprising for a team with such a healthy appeal worldwide.
One of Americas top sporting towns, the Philadelphia fanbase has powered the Eagles to third position on our X follower list. An impressive 3.9 million people follow the official Eagles account on X, where the bio encourages the team with the familiar ‘Fly Eagles Fly’ motto. The Eagles won their sole Super Bowl title by defeating the Patriots in 2017, but they haven’t managed to repeat that feat on this list.
I certainly expected to see the Dallas Cowboys on top of this list when I started researching the numbers, and I guess a lot of people will have thought the same. However, the 5-time Super Bowl champs are beaten both on the number of rings and X followers by that team over in Boston. Still, the Cowboys take number two spot on our list thanks to a very healthy 4.4 million followers on X, more than double than the majority of NFL teams.
Boston is notorious as one of the biggest sports towns in the country, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised to see the New England Patriots topping this list. They have an advantage of around 200,000 over the Cowboys, making them clear winners in our X followers poll with a total of precisely 4,653,429 followers at time of writing. Of course the Pats have been one of the most successful franchises in the NFL over the past 20 years, and one with a strong international following. All of which means that the Patriots are the X champions, an award to add to their six Super Bowl titles.
Only one NFL team’s official account has garnered less than a million followers on X, and that dubious distinction goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Like the Panthers, the Jags came into the league in 1995 and they too still await their first Super Bowl win. However, the Carolina fanbase has come out in force on X to follow their team, while the Floridians have not followed suit.
As their bio on Twitter sadly states, ‘it was always the Jags’.
Here’s the complete rankings list from the Pats all the way down to the Jags, according to how many X/Twitter followers they have at time of writing:
