Believe it or not, guessing the Super Bowl Gatorade color each year is one of the most popular betting lines. Teams from past to present have a history of dousing their coach with a gallon of Gatorade after winning the Super Bowl, where it’s tradition. To make matters more interesting, fans from all around love to guess what color may be in store for this year’s bucket of Super Bowl Gatorade.
In this article, we’ll discuss the history of Super Bowl Gatorade, including why it’s so special for fans, unique color trends and how dumping Gatorade on the coach is a favored celebration for all.
Starting as far back as 2001, the Ravens would win the Super Bowl with a beloved yellow color, starting the trend throughout the 2000s of “guessing that Gatorade color”. The next year in 2002 would be nobody’s year, with the Patriots winning the Super Bowl and no Gatorade thrown about.
For some reason, the Patriots are one of the few teams that failed to showcase any Gatorade dumping after winning the Super Bowl in 2002, 2004, and 2017 (Ravens in 2004 did not show any Gatorade either), leading the results of the Gatorade color to be ‘none’ in those years (maybe Bill Belichick isn’t about swimming in Gatorade?). The Patriots did, however, become one of the first teams to dump clear Gatorade in 2005, setting a trend of 4 straight years of teams using clear Gatorade after winning the Super Bowl until 2008 when the Giants won.
Yellow would resurface in 2009 for the Pittsburgh Steelers victory, right before Orange would set a two-year streak for the Saints in 2010 and Packers in 2011. From here to 2024, the colors purple, orange, blue, and yellow will all make appearances, with the color red completely failing to cut once. Clear color hasn’t shown up in ages since 2008, when the color blue would surface in its place for the 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2022 Super Bowls.
It’s an obvious choice for most winning teams’ favorite Gatorade color. If we exclude the odd stretch of clear Gatorade (which might as well be water) Orange and Purple are huge favorites. Since 2010, orange Gatorade has been used by 5 different teams, compared to Purple, which has shown up 4 times since 2003, with its latest appearances in both Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl wins in 2023 and 2024. Blue Gatorade is a close second, showing up 4 times since the Patriots’ victory in 2015 and was used back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 for the Rams and Chiefs.
The only way an estimate of the next Gatorade color can be made is from past trends. Since 2021, back-to-back Gatorade colors have showcased themselves, with blue appearing in 2021 and 2022, and purple appearing in 2023 and 2024. The last time Purple was used was by the Kansas City Chiefs, who’d win both the 2023 and 2024 Super Bowl, and are now once again in the Super Bowl final against the Philadelphia Eagles.
There are several things to consider, including the fact that the Chiefs may commit a repeat win, meaning Purple could appear once again, although they did use Blue in their 2020 Super Bowl victory. The Eagles used Yellow the last time they won, although Green has never appeared in the Super Bowl. From these trends, we feel that Purple, Blue, or Yellow (with a slight possibility of Green) may be the pick for this year’s beloved Super Bowl Gatorade color.
