We have a rematch of the Super Bowl LVII. The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams have played great football to get to this point. We will explain how each team’s season has gone while making a Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl pick.
The Chiefs once again had a great regular season. It may not have looked pretty at times, but they still found a way to finish atop the AFC West with a 15-2 record. They are looking for their third straight Super Bowl win, which would set the record.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led KC, even though he had a down year by his standards. He failed to throw for over 4,000 yards for the first time in his career. However, Mahomes still threw 26 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions. Even in a down year, Mahomes, along with a strong defense, was able to lead his team to 15 wins.
Perhaps the offense also took a step back this year due to the loss of Isiah Pacheco to injury. The third-year running back was ready to break out but only played in seven regular-season games due to a leg injury. He is back now but has not looked the same. Kareem Hunt has helped fill in, rushing for over 700 yards but averaging just 3.6 yards per carry.
Looking at their playoff run, the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 23-14 and then the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in another instant classic. Xavier Worthy has made his presence felt through the two games, catching 11 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side, George Karlaftis dominated the Divisional Round game against the Texans, recording three sacks. These two players could be instrumental in this Super Bowl matchup for the Chiefs.
Like the Chiefs, the Eagles also had a terrific season, finishing with a 14-3 record and winning the NFC East. They were led by Saquon Barkley, who had a historic season. Barkley led the NFL in rushing with 2,005 yards and 15 total touchdowns. This offense has been run through Saquon Barkley all season long.
His success has continued into the postseason, leading the Eagles to victories against the Packers, Rams and Commanders. Barkley rushed for at least 118 yards in all three games, including the Divisional Round matchup when he rushed for 205 yards.
With Saquon having such a monster season, the passing attack took a step back. Jalen Hurts missed three games and failed to throw for over 3,000 yards. However, he added 600+ rushing yards and had a combined 32 touchdowns.
The Eagles’ top receiver, A.J. Brown, had a roller-coaster season, voicing his frustrations multiple times, but he still managed to have over 1,000 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns. Brown had a huge Conference Championship game, catching 6 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. He must play another key role if the Eagles want to win this game.
This is a great matchup between two teams who deserve to be in this spot. As mentioned above, we saw this matchup two years ago and remember how that ended. The Chiefs won an amazing game that came down to the wire, 38-35.
Looking at the Eagles, they took a massive step forward this season on the defensive side of the ball. Drafting Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean and pairing them with Darius Slay in the secondary worked out great. Additionally, second-year player Jalen Carter has turned into a game-wrecker up front. The Eagles defense ranked 1st in opponents points per game, opponents yards per game and opponents yards per play.
From the Chiefs’ perspective, they know how to win football games. There is nothing fancy about this team, but where they thrived this season was on third downs, ranking 3rd in third-down conversion rate. This is a testament to great coaching and excellent quarterback play from Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.
For our Chiefs vs. Eagles pick, we expect the Chiefs to pull out a victory. However, the Eagles’ defensive line will cause problems for Patrick Mahomes in the pocket. If the Chiefs want to win this game, we believe Patrick Mahomes must do a lot with his legs. Mahomes has done that in this postseason, rushing 18 times in the two games played. Thus, we are picking Patrick Mahomes to have more than six rushing attempts.
