American football fans love a good high-scoring football match. Even more so when the Super Bowl is so offensively heavy that both teams score an unprecedented amount.
Over the last few decades, we’ve witnessed some of the highest-scoring Super Bowl finals in existence, which is why in this article, we’ll outline five of the highest-scoring Super Bowls based on their total score from both teams, including what teams were playing, when the Super Bowl took place, and what the final score of the game was.
Starting the list of high-scoring Super Bowls is a 2-decade old match between the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII in 1993. In this one, the Cowboys would commit one of the biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history, winning an entire 52-17 over the Bills.
By the end of the first half, the Cowboys were only leading 28-10 before eventually pulling away from the competition in the fourth quarter, scoring 52 total points to Bills 17, leading to not only one of the highest tallies for any team but one of the highest overall game totals (69) in any Super Bowl we’ve witnessed.
Next up is a match that ties its predecessor exactly 10 years prior in terms of total game score, which took place between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003. It was a bit closer than the Cowboys vs. Bills final, although the Buccaneers would see through a comfortable victory with a 48-21 scoreline.
While the first quarter would only have 6 points to show for, the Buccaneers somehow managed to return 3 interceptions for touchdowns in one of the highest-ever record interceptions (5 total) in any Super Bowl, along with a game total of 69 to match.
In an extremely recent Super Bowl final between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, football fans would witness one of the closest high-scoring Super Bowl finals in the history of the sport. Patrick Maholmes would help his team overcome a 14-24 halftime deficit to win Super Bowl LVII with an incredible stretch of passing touchdowns (3).
Even though Jalen Hurts would perform his heart out with 1 passing and 3 rushing touchdowns, it was not enough to overcome the might of the Kansas City Chiefs, who’d eventually win the game 38-35, leading the game to end with one of the highest totals ever recorded in a final at 73 total points.
For this 2018 classic Super Bowl LII, the Philadelphia Eagles would edge out the New England Patriots in one of the largest-scoring Super Bowl games in history, beating out the 2023 Chiefs vs. Eagles tally by just one total point. It didn’t start with too many points, ending the first quarter with only 12 total points scored.
The game would completely ramp up in the following 3 quarters, with at least 19+ points scored in each. Tom Brady would throw the most yards in the Super Bowl (505), although the Patriots would ultimately fall 41-33 on the final scoreline to the Eagles as Nick Foles threw 3 touchdowns and caught one thrown from tight end Trey Burton, we all acknowledge this game as one of the highest scoring Super Bowl scores with a total of 74 points in the game.
It’s been nearly 20 years, and the record for the highest total score in Super Bowl history has yet to be broken, set back in 1995 during Super Bowl XXIX between the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers. The 49ers never really gave up the lead in this one, finishing the first half with a 28-10 lead, which is already a higher score than some Super Bowl totals.
Eventually, the Chargers would fall even deeper into a pit at the beginning of the second half with a 42-10 scoreline, before the game ultimately ended 49-26 in favor of the 49ers with a total of 75 points scored, the highest ever in NFL Super Bowl history to date.
