The NCAA March Madness tournament showcases the hard work and skill of the top 64 college basketball teams across the nation. However, there’s only one victor who takes home the annual Naismith trophy for men and women, with champions of the beloved March tournament lining up since 1939.
In this article, we’ll outline the five most recent Women’s March Madness winners since 2019 (excluding 2020 due to COVID-19), including when they occurred, who won the championship and what the final score was in the game.
The Baylor Bears would head to the annual March Madness tournament in the 2019 season as a No. 1 seed from the Big 12 conference. They’d dominate all competition they’d come across, finishing their championship run season with a 37-1 record coached under Kim Mulkey.
In the finals, they faced a tough Notre Dame Fighting Irish team, yet they overcame any adversities put in their way with a narrow 82-81 victory.
After a canceled 2020 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Stanford Cardinals would take home the 2021 Naismith trophy. Reaching the tournament as a No. 1 seed from the ACC, Stanford would boast a 31-2 final record under head coach Tara VanDerveer.
Much like Baylor in 2019, Stanford would blow out all competition until heading to a competitive Division I final, which saw Stanford defeat the Arizona Wildcats in a 54-53 final scoreline.
The South Carolina Gamecocks would play in the 2022 NCAA Division 1 March Madness tournament as a No. 1 coming out of the SEC. They showcased an impressive tournament run, winning every game by at least 8 points or more, to finish their championship season with a 35-2 record coached under Dawn Staley.
In the end, South Carolina dominated the UCONN Huskies in the final game, which saw them take home the trophy under a 64-49 scoreline.
The famous 2023 NCAA Championship saw some of the best female talents come to the game in decades. The LSU Tigers, despite their extremely dominant run in the tournament, would head into March Madness as a No. 3 seed. Legendary head coach Kim Mulkey was back again, and under her leadership, LSU would end their incredible championship season with a 34-2 record, winning every game by a 12-point margin at the least.
The finals saw two WNBA prospects, Caitlyn Clark at Iowa and Angel Reese at LSU, face off, and while Iowa was slightly the favorites in this matchup, the Tigers would have no issue in taking home the Division I trophy after winning the game 102-85.
Following up on their Championship campaign from just two years earlier, South Carolina would once again head to the March Madness tournament as an unmatched No. 1 seed. Still coached by Dawn Staley, the difference in this season was that the team would perform immaculately, ending the season with a perfect 38-0 record as one of the best female college basketball teams to ever compete.
Unfortunately for the Iowa Hawkeyes, they lost their second final in a row, this time to a dominant South Carolina team that would put up 87 points to Iowa’s 75. This South Carolina team is turning into a true dynasty, especially with Staley leading the program.
