Since taking the helm at the University of South Carolina in 2008, Dawn Staley has transformed the Gamecocks into a dominant force in women’s basketball. Under her guidance, South Carolina has secured three NCAA championships, including an undefeated season in 2024, winning Staley pretty much every coach of the year award available last season. Staley’s remarkable achievements have not only elevated the program but have also positioned her as the highest-paid coach in women’s basketball, with a contract averaging $4 million annually.
Kim Mulkey’s coaching career is distinguished by her success at multiple programs. She led Baylor University to three NCAA championships before taking over at Louisiana State University (LSU) and guiding them to their first national title in 2023. She is also a three-time AP College Basketball Coach of the Year. Mulkey’s immediate impact at LSU underscores her ability to revitalize programs and achieve excellence.
Tara VanDerveer’s illustrious career includes leading Stanford University to three NCAA championships (1990, 1992, and 2021). In December 2020, she became the all-time winningest coach in women’s college basketball, surpassing Pat Summitt’s record. VanDerveer later became the winningest coach in college basketball history in January 2024, surpassing Mike Krzyzewski. VanDerveer’s tenure at Stanford solidified the Cardinal as a perennial powerhouse in the sport.
Pat Summitt’s legacy at the University of Tennessee is monumental. Over her 38-year career, she amassed 1,098 wins and led the Lady Volunteers to eight NCAA championships. The legendary bench boss has won National Coach of the Year five times. Summitt’s influence extended beyond her impressive record; she was instrumental in elevating the profile of women’s basketball nationally and mentoring countless players who went on to successful careers both on and off the court.
Geno Auriemma has set the standard for excellence in women’s college basketball. As the head coach of the University of Connecticut (UConn) since 1985, he has led the Huskies to 11 NCAA championships. He was Naismith Coach of the Year eight times in the Italian’s illustrious career. In November 2024, Auriemma became the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, surpassing Tara VanDerveer’s record, with all his victories achieved at UConn.
These five coaches have not only achieved remarkable success on the court but have also played pivotal roles in advancing women’s college basketball, inspiring future generations of players and coaches.
